Revelation 15-16 (CSB)

God’s action in the Exodus was a foreshadow of final liberation through Jesus

Worship is prophetic preparation

The bowls are a replay of the plagues that God sent on Egypt

Moments of worship are often followed by offers of idols

Idolatry — the elevation of something that’s not God to his place

Exodus Parallel: Third and Sixth plagues — Exodus 8:16-19; 9:8-11

Egyptian god: Sekhmet — goddess of healing

Health as vanity

Exodus Parallel: First plague — Exodus 7:19-21

Egyptian god: Hapi — god of the Nile (source of life)

Money

Exodus Parallel: Fourth & Ninth plague — Exodus 8:20-32 & Exodus 10:21-29

Egyptian gods: Ra (sun god, who reigned supreme in Egypt), Khepri (god of creation and rebirth)

False enlightenment

Exodus Parallel: Second plague – Exodus 8:1-15

Egyptian goddess: Heqet – goddess of fertility, depicted as frog-headed

Pleasure

Exodus Parallel: Tenth plague – Exodus 12:29-32

Egyptian god: Pharoah himself, worshipped as divine

Self-deification

The first cry purchased redemption; the second cry brings restoration

Revelation 16:15 (ESV)

The same God who brought Israel out of Egypt will bring the Church out of Babylon

To stay awake in Babylon means to live as those already free from Egypt’s idols and Babylon’s deception
